ETICS and facade insulation in Hamburg

An external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS) reduces heating energy demand, protects the external wall and gives the facade a new face. DALGA BAU has installed ETICS in Hamburg since 2000 – in new builds and in energy-efficiency refurbishments.

ETICS build-up

  1. Adhesive mortar on the masonry
  2. Insulation board of EPS or mineral wool, additionally anchored depending on the system
  3. Reinforcing mortar with embedded mesh
  4. Primer as render base
  5. Finishing render – or alternatively clinker brick slips

Scope of work

  • Facade insulation in new and existing buildings
  • Plinth zone and junctions with windows and reveals
  • Fire barriers to system specification
  • Facade mouldings and window surrounds within the ETICS
  • Finishing render in various textures or brick slip finish

EPS or mineral wool?

EPS insulation boards are light and economical. Mineral wool is non-combustible and more vapour-permeable. Which material is right depends on building class, fire protection, building physics and budget – we will gladly advise you.

GEG and funding

Facade refurbishments are subject to the requirements of the German Buildings Energy Act (GEG). Federal funding programmes (BEG) or those of IFB Hamburg may apply to energy-efficiency refurbishment. Conditions change regularly – please check the current status before awarding a contract.

Frequently asked questions

What is an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS)?

ETICS is an insulation system applied to the external wall, consisting of adhesive mortar, insulation boards, anchors where required, a reinforced base coat and a final finish of top-coat render or brick slips. All components must belong to one approved system.

Do I have to insulate my facade under the GEG?

There is no general obligation. However, if the render on more than 10 % of a facade’s area is renewed, the GEG sets minimum requirements for the thermal insulation of the external wall (U-value 0.24 W/(m²K)). Exemptions are possible in individual cases.
