Clinker brick slips on ETICS – brick slip facades in Hamburg

Clinker brick shapes Hamburg’s cityscape. With clinker brick slips on an external thermal insulation composite system, you combine the typical Hanseatic look with modern thermal insulation – without the weight and space requirement of a masonry outer leaf.

How a brick slip facade is built

On a brick slip facade, the slips replace the primer and finishing render: they are set in adhesive mortar directly on the reinforced layer of the ETICS and then pointed. This requires an ETICS approved for brick slip cladding; anchoring and slip format are determined by the system approval.

Scope of work

  • Clinker brick slips on new ETICS
  • Corner slips at building corners and reveals
  • Pointing
  • Combination of rendered and clinker surfaces

Brick slips or masonry outer leaf?

Brick slips are light, need no foundation of their own and keep the wall build-up slim. A masonry outer leaf is more solid but takes up more space and needs its own foundation. For refurbishing existing buildings, brick slips on ETICS are therefore often the more practical solution.

Frequently asked questions

Can clinker brick slips be bonded to ETICS?

Yes, provided the ETICS used is approved for brick slip cladding. The slips are set in adhesive mortar on the reinforced layer and then pointed. Insulation material, anchoring and slip format are determined by the system approval.

What is an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS)?

ETICS is an insulation system applied to the external wall, consisting of adhesive mortar, insulation boards, anchors where required, a reinforced base coat and a final finish of top-coat render or brick slips. All components must belong to one approved system.
