01 — The system

Facades are systems.
We master every detail.

Eight layers determine a building’s energy performance, sound insulation and service life. We execute seven of them ourselves – precisely and to DIN standards, from interior plaster to the final coat of paint. The masonry is provided by the shell contractor.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions on insulation and plastering.

What is an external thermal insulation composite system (ETICS)?

ETICS is an insulation system applied to the external wall, consisting of adhesive mortar, insulation boards, anchors where required, a reinforced base coat and a final finish of top-coat render or brick slips. All components must belong to one approved system.

Can clinker brick slips be bonded to ETICS?

Yes, provided the ETICS used is approved for brick slip cladding. The slips are set in adhesive mortar on the reinforced layer and then pointed. Insulation material, anchoring and slip format are determined by the system approval.

Why are underground car park ceilings insulated?

Underground car parks are unheated and heavily ventilated. The ceiling usually adjoins heated residential or commercial spaces. Without insulation, the result is heat loss, cold floors and thermal bridges. The German Buildings Energy Act (GEG) sets requirements for these building elements.

Which insulation materials are common in underground car parks?

Because of fire protection requirements, usually non-combustible materials such as stone wool, mineral insulation boards or multi-layer wood wool boards with a mineral wool core. The building regulations, the garage regulations (Garagenverordnung) and the building’s fire safety strategy are decisive.

Do I have to insulate my facade under the GEG?

There is no general obligation. However, if the render on more than 10 % of a facade’s area is renewed, the GEG sets minimum requirements for the thermal insulation of the external wall (U-value 0.24 W/(m²K)). Exemptions are possible in individual cases.

What is the difference between gypsum plaster and lime-cement plaster?

Gypsum plaster is an interior plaster that can be trowelled smooth easily, used in living spaces. Lime-cement plaster is harder and less sensitive to moisture, and is used in wet rooms, basements, on plinths and as exterior render.

How long does interior plaster take to dry?

As a rule of thumb, allow about one day per millimetre of plaster thickness with good ventilation and normal temperatures. Only then should painting, wallpapering or tiling follow; the manufacturer’s instructions take precedence.

When can exterior render be applied?

As a rule, only at air and substrate temperatures above +5 °C, with no frost, rain or strong sunshine during application and curing. Exact limits are given in the manufacturer’s instructions.
